Tuesday, November 14, 2006: Long-lived souls?
It's said that when you mention someone and that someone walks in the door / contacts you, that person will have a long life.
Really?
Then if that's the case, I know someone outside my family who will be long-lived.
It all started out quite innocently on Sunday. I was looking at the Cedar Yearbook 2006 (yes, the one entitled Growing from Strength to Strength). More specifically, I was looking at the Choir leaders' spread (Go figure out where it is).
And - just then - one of the leaders called me. Don't bother asking me what she called about, it's not relevant here. Not only is it not relevant, I'd also like to keep it under wraps (although it isn't really under wraps).
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (it means "absolutely stunningly fantastic", according to http:// www.epennypress.com/ Words_Starting_with_S/ sunburned_supercontinent/ supercalifragilisticexpialidocious_definition.html [remove the spaces and enter the URL into your browser if you want to visit it]). Liz's going to be long-lived (although I doubt she would ever believe such a thing).
Then again, how do all these things come about?
People have feared death since time immemorial, myself included (no forwarded morbid chain mails, please). Hence, you have longevity being pinned to staying up to guard your parents' age over the night of the Chinese New Year's Eve (as in the Chinese custom of 守岁), or the abovementioned phenomenon (known in Chinese as "说曹操,曹操就到"; the English equivalent is "speak of the devil", but I find that a lot worse).
Come to think of it, do we need to fear death?
Perhaps, not.
It's just a part of life. After all, once we are born, we have to age, we have to perish. Why, you ask?
Biologically, youthful life simply can't be sustained. I think this is due to the decline in production of growth hormone, or something like that. (I'm not putting any Net research here; the Net search is so massive that it's giving me a headache.) Since death is such a natural part of life, so universal that nothing can escape it, should we fear? No; it's normal.
However, the above doesn't mean I approve of people trying to hasten the natural process. In fact, the group I was referring to in the previous sentence doesn't even use any viruses or anything (though they might in future). They use primitive kitchen weaponry.
Apart from that, death isn't really welcomed because of people's sentiments for each other (be it family or romantic love, friendship, et cetera). Face it, we all have to go. When Atropos cuts the thread, when God signals the time's-up, it's time to leave.
And it's not time for me to leave just yet, although I should just leave my blog alone until I have more to post.
